What if Detective Games actually let the player be the Detective?

Most detective games don't actually let the player be Sherlock Holmes. Instead, the game is Sherlock, and the player is confined to the role of Watson, while the game tries desperately to persuade players that they're smart because LOOK AT ALL THE PROBLEMS THE GAME HAS SOLVED FOR YOU!

Listen, nobody is fooled by these games' attempts at making the player feel smart by dangling bananas in front of monkeys (the players are monkeys in this analogy). Isn't it time someone actually MADE DETECTIVE game?

Criminal Consequences is NOT a normal Detective game.

Alright. Here's the straight pitch. Criminal Consequences is a REAL detective game. No hand holding, no crazy coincidences, no brute forcing, no going to mother game and crying until she lets you solve the mystery. There is a game. There is a mystery. There is logical induction and logical deduction. There are clues, witnesses, and suspects. There IS a solution to the madness...

But only YOU can solve the mystery.

And if you mess up, the murderer escapes and an innocent person goes to jail. AND YOU WILL BE NONE THE WISER.

It's that simple.

Estimated play time: 15-30 minutes.

An Experimental Game

This game was created in a short period of time by a team of three for a game jam. As a result, the game is... a little rough around the edges. This game is somewhat of an experiment to see if a fun experience can be created out of making a realistic detective game. This game should be seen, therefore, as experimental - an experience that's short, to the point, and that will either pioneer the genre, or get promptly buried in the giant list of games on itch.io. Probably the latter.

Hopefully this small project gives someone inspiration to build up to a full hands-off detective experience that will test player's abilities at critical thinking and bringing the evidence together.

Stay Safe Game Jam

This game was made for the Stay Safe Game Jam, which arose to give people like myself something to do during the Covid-19 outbreak. And while I can confirm my room is still too small, at least I have enough space for a computer to code with. In accordance with the theme of the jam, all collaboration was done remotely through sketchy websites like Discord and Dropbox.

Special thanks to my graphics guy, Big Tony (most famous for his cameo here), and my sound guy, DJ Sawyer (stream here), for helping to bring this thing together.

This game is really fun and entertaining to play. It would be really cool if you could continue on it perhaps by adding different chapters/levels more rooms to explore and crimes to solve. There is quite a bit you could do. Great game tho 5/5

YES.

This game was a breath of fresh air, I had half-given up on finding a game that would at least try to make the player put his sleuthing to work in a mystery game, and I feel like the dev did so perfectly in a very short, and if you enjoy detective stories, fun game.

I was probably overthinking it when I wrote this wall of text, but it was fun.

Yeah, it's a cliché but I think the killer is the butler.

His testimony is the weakest of all, if you were to clean a room to "the best of your abilities" then how would there still be vomit on the floor, a broken bottle and the dirty rag you used to clean it still there as well! The broken chair was also on the floor, but could have been broken after he cleaned it.

The only person that the game hints that could be vomitting is Ferguson (drunkard), but he could not have vomitted there after the cleaning because he was kicked out and with alibi to support this.

The butler also claimed that he was not in the room with Mr. Reece while he cleaned, but that seems suspicious given that no one mentioned Mr. Reece coming in or out of the room, so he probably WAS there.

The butler was also probably the last person to come to his room before Ms. Reece screamed, announcing his death.

Knowing that he was recent hire also makes him even more suspicious.

Regarding the other possible suspects, it could definitely not have been his sister.

She was talking with Damian in the likely time of the murder and there are three people confirming this happened (butler, sister and Damien himself). She would also need to overpower her brother physically, but seeing she is quite short compared to the others, that seems unlikely. Her motive, financial stress, is also weak.

It could not have been the drunkard, if he killed Reece at the time he was in his room, the butler would've seen his body and announced it before the sister. He also was kicked out after that. He has no motive at all.

It likely wasn't Damien, although he had the strongest apparent motive for the murder. But he also shared Isabella's solid alibi.

It could have been Elliot Roth, the mysterious caller that no one refers to, but there is no mention of his motive or clues pointing to him, he almost appears to seem like a hitman, not hired by Damien (since Elliot says he seemed "a little nervous" and he wouldn't incriminate his own employer), so he could be hired by Isabella. The fact that she chose a suspiciously convenient time to check on Reece to announce his murder and seem more innocent makes this more likely, but this hitman hypothesis still seems far-fetched.

How did it happen? I imagine it went like this: at the start of the party, the butler was greeting guests and when Ferguson, known drunk, came in the butler gave him a wine bottle with unusually high alcohol content and suggested he went to Reece's room, where he would make a mess, then the butler enters the room inconspicuously, kicks out the drunk and kills Reece by strangling him after having a scuffle with him that breaks the chair, drops the sword and makes Reece pick up that knife. During that, the drunk distracts the guests. The Butler could have used his hands, the rag or really any other strangling tool and disposed of it, making it look like he was cleaning. Then he went back to the party to make it appear as if he wasn't involved.

What is his motive? It's not very clear to me but it surely has to do with his country. It might have been because he saw the precious Vorhztakhan knife Reece had before the party and that sparkled some reason for the Butler to kill him, the fact that he forgot to clean the room and could mean this wasn't a premeditaded murder, at least not mastermindedly schemed from years of planning.

Killing at a party where his sister, Damien and the drunk appeared did well to throw a red herring, so he was likely scheming before the party.

I have no idea if I got it right, and if the dev feels like it, can I get a word on who the killer is?


Game design wise, I liked it. I think you could've included a solution at the end explaining how it happened but I imagine you wanted to stray from that.

Yeah, that's sort of the idea. That's why I consider the game "experimental"

Ultimately, I think I have some ideas for how to expand the game with giving some hints as to whether you are right (I think I talked about this in a dev post) but ultimately this was a short game jam experiment about creating an interesting experience.

If you've solved the story, however, I'm fairly confident you have the right answer, and I'm pretty confident you'll know as well. ;)

I definitely enjoy the whole concept behind that idea. I just couldn't help but feel unsatisfied getting the same statement of doubt at the end, regardless of if I got it right. Hahah.

I actually 100% agree with you about the result, but it's hard to think of a way to fix the issue without making the game consumable. I'm wondering about procedurally generated mysteries (I wrote an outline of this idea in a devblog), but I'm not really 100% sure of where to start with that concept, since mysteries are not exactly easy for a computer to understand (lol).

But if you want closure, the murderer was REDACTED

Can you conceptualize what you mean by real mystery? Do you mean that there is no set correct answer (ie randomization of suspects), or there is a need for real congnitive concideration in solving a crime? or some thing more esoteric?

By real mystery, I mean that there is a correct answer, but if you accuse the wrong person, the game is just gonna roll with it.

Oh! so you mean like Zombie Society - Dead Detective by Lu Muja? I like the idea, but also in that game is proper evidence collection and brainstorming a conclusion. I was expecting that to be the kicker of your game, but I understand and see how multiple endings could be a part of a real mystery.

Possibly. Keep in mind this was the result of a 72 hour game jam. There are plenty of features that we just didn't have time to fit in.
